HYPE Unlock: Calendar Said 9.92M, Team Claimed 180K
A 55x gap. Why unlock calendars lie and where to find the real signal.

The calendar promised 9.92M HYPE. The team claimed 180K. A 55x gap — that's not a rounding error, it's the system.
Every month unlock calendars scream: "Nearly 10M HYPE worth ~$800M hitting the market soon." Traders see the number, model the sell pressure, set their stops. Then it turns out the team wallets receive not 9.92M but 180K tokens — 1.8% of the headline figure. In October they claimed 3.75M and instantly sold the lot to a single OTC buyer. In April it was 330K. In February 140K. The whitepaper's linear vesting schedule is a ceiling, not a sell plan.
Why does this happen? The Hyperliquid team isn't obligated to claim everything that's "vested." Tokens sit in vesting wallets until the team initiates unstaking. The unstaking queue takes seven days. So the actual volume that could hit the order book is visible on-chain a week before the calendar date. October's unstaking started around Sept 30. For November — if the pattern repeats, unstaking should have begun around Oct 30. No public data on that yet.
Buybacks are the only counterweight. By October the Assistance Fund had bought back 48M HYPE for $1.36B. But in the week before October's unlock, buybacks totaled $11.8M — just 3.5% of that unlock's dollar value. If November's claim lands near October's 3.75M, a week of buybacks won't absorb it. If it's April-sized at 330K, they'll swallow it easily.
What this means for a trader: don't trade the "9.92M unlock" headline. Watch three signals:
- Unstaking from contributor wallets 7 days before the date — the first real read on size.
- The team's official claim announcement (usually around the 6th).
- Spot CVD and perp OI after settlement. Negative CVD with rising perp OI = someone distributing spot while hedging on futures.
The calendar is noise. The blockchain is signal. And the signal, one week before Nov 6, is still quiet.
